The commercial owners are identified and the author recalls the multitude of tasks these engines undertook. He also provides information about the companies that made them and traces the evolving designs of the many types that were constructed. The first section of the book is devoted to magnificent showmen's engines. The body of the book illustrates the huge road locomotives which were used for heavy haulage. Also described are smaller road locomotives, ideal for general haulage.
