The newly revised Pevsner guide covering the very best of Staffordshire's buildings and architectural features An expanded, updated and fully revised guide to the buildings of Staffordshire, published fifty years after Pevsner's original survey of 1974. The first edition completed the original Buildings of England series, and its successor is in turn the final instalment of the revision programme begun in 1983, when the first large-format English volume appeared. The new edition comprises an expert introduction and a detailed gazetteer, including contributions on the west and south of the county by Chris Pickford. Highlights include the cathedral city of Lichfield, the surprisingly little-known county town of Stafford and outstanding country houses from the Tudor, Stuart and Georgian centuries, such as Wootton Lodge, Weston Park and Shugborough Hall with its internationally important garden buildings. A distinctive industrial history is reflected in the pottery buildings of Stoke-on-Trent and the breweries of Burton-upon-Trent. Among the smaller towns, Leek was the centre of a thriving Arts and Crafts community. Over a hundred and twenty specially taken colour photographs are included, alongside numerous maps and text illustrations.
