The Long Range Desert Group was one of the most famous special forces units of World War II, operating deep behind enemy lines in the deserts of North Africa. Devised by the explorer Ralph Bagnold, the unit specialized in reconnaissance and raiding missions, and guided other special units, including the first SAS raiders in North Africa. The unit's success lay in its heavily modified vehicles, and the men's exceptional skills in desert driving, navigation and keeping the machines running against all odds. The Chevrolet WB became the signature vehicle of the LRDG, being fast, simple and easy to handle. But the unit also found roles for other machines, from Jeeps to improvised artillery trucks. With rare photos and meticulous new artwork, this book explains how the vehicles of the LRDG were adopted, modified and used, as well as the driving techniques and special kit necessary for surviving behind of the most hostile environments on earth.
